Ya know, when I read stories of self defense, I never see that happening. Thief either runs for his life, or get ventilated. I guess thief snatches gun only happens in Hollywood.
Even in the FBI's U.S. police officer death statistics for 2011, only 3 out of 72 firearm deaths on duty were by the officers' own firearm (pistol, revolver, rifle or shotgun):

Stated differently, in 69 out of 72 deaths of police officers by firearms in 2011, the killers used their own firearm.
