Why We Need Background Checks

Think of a 3 x 3 matrix of mutually exclusive states.
The columns are method of firearm transfer:
1. Obtained Legally with background check
2. Obtained Legally without background check
3. Obtained Illegally, without background check (theft, transfer to known prohibited person, etc.)

The rows are methods of firearms usage:
1. Not used in a crime other than illegal possession
2. Used in a crime other than illegal possession
3. Used in a crime, including illegal possession

So, 9 possible states. The greatest amount are the first two columns in row one, but gun control advocates insist that all transfers should be row 1, column 1, forcing some transfers that are now column 2 to column 3. They want us to ignore that this will not significantly affect the numbers in column 3 or row 2 and row 3. They want us to believe that they have "done something", aside from imposing a significant burden that really does not reduce use of firearms in crime. On the contrary, government should be implementing measures to promote greater ownership of firearms and safer, more effective usage in the populace. If the amount of resources now dedicated to firearms law enforcement were instead applied to firearms education and training for the entire non-prohibited population (not just military and LEO personnel), then we wouldn't really need to have this discussion.
