David, maybe I am woefully misinformed, but around these parts, Chicago area, those are STARTING salaries. All of the teachers I know make in excess of 100K per year.
@Bill... the cost of living in AZ is much less than in Chicago. Homes cost less, gas costs less, and most importantly TAXES are lower. In a time long ago I lived in that faraway place called NYC. I paid 40% of my salary to Fed Taxes, State Taxes and City Taxes.... then I moved to AZ and got to keep 15% more of my check. I made less but it went farther. My housing costs in AZ 20% of my budget not the 40% they were in NYC. etc.
Comparing numbers like that is not a representative comparison.
NYC spends the most in the country per student and isn't even in the top 20 for schools. BTW it is estimated that NYC pays $50K per student annually.
Yes, the teachers need to be better paid, but the districts are the ones that dole out the pot of money they get from the state and they have been left "off the hook" for this one.
The governor already stated they would get their 20% increase but they walked anyway. The legislature has a bill on the floor with the money it.. they are still walking. Democratic legislators are wearing "red for ed" shirts on the floor of the State House and calling for permanent tax increases. Sound familiar?
This is a political move to try to unseat the governor in the elections in November and place their Democrat candidate in as governor. (see a different article in this blog for info on Mr. Garcia). The president of the AFT was in AZ yesterday and spoke at their rally. One of the "leaders" has been in the state for 4 months, is a former Sanders campaign worker and just this year decided to move from IL to AZ to teach.
Oh I forgot to mention at the first Red for Ed rally it was actually a campaign rally for Mr. Garcia.
Not all teachers in AZ were for the walkout, they are being bullied into going along with it. Do the math and the 78% of those teachers that "voted to walk out" are actually less than 50% of the teachers.
I don't appreciate their negotiating tactics, nor will I be bullied into tax increases or anything else.
