[More]That's been proposed in detail for years-- with the acknowledgment that it is still an infringement but it nonetheless significantly reduces controls and opportunities for abuse. It's been deliberately ignored by the rice bowl gun groups who know about it but don't want you to.
My position has been that I'm against actually doing it because it's still a prior restraint, but for using it to expose the lying hypocrisy of those who say they want background checks when what they really want is registration.

David, what about a simple "go / no-go" marker on driver licenses? Everyone gets the same treatment.
There would be the usual "same name" confusion problems, but we have those now with NICS; given the stunning level of government incompetence we suffer under any accurate and timely revocation procedure would be a steaming pile of fail, but it largely avoids the prior restraint issue.
