A bit of a simile to illustrate my views on the social compact. Most of us don't like to fix toilets. Fixing a toilet is not "rocket surgery" (a phrase I picked up from one of Limbaugh's callers). Just about anyone with the time and tools can fix one. But for a number of reasons we'd rather not. So we call in a pro, a "fixer of toilets", AKA a plumber, and write him/her a check in compensation for doing something we'd rather not do. In return, we expect the work to be done in an efficient manner, the first time. But what if, after calling several plumbers and writing each one a check, the toilet still doesn't work. At some point, it becomes a better plan to buy some tools and toilet parts and give it our best shot. We find the job to be distasteful, but we need that toilet to work.
A similar scenario applies to national defense, criminal justice, and governance in general. If at some point it becomes obvious to even to most doltish of 29 year old ex Brooklyn bartenders that the job is being paid for but not getting done and that something has to change.
Cutting to the chase, I once heard it said that vigilante justice is a lot like bad breath. Its certainly better than no breath at all.
