The "common sense" theme established by the letter is happily coincidental. My "Rights Watch" column for the month is "Senseless in Seattle," commenting on media coverage and calls for more "citizen disarmament following "the murder of four police officers in a Pacific Northwest coffee shop by a felon with a history of violence"--one aided and abetted by family members. A former Okaloosa County deputy living in Navarre has been charged with misusing his Sheriff's Office computer to help his wife's business.

William "Bill" Schinstine, 51, faces 195 felony charges of computer access without authority and 195 misdemeanor charges of misuse of confidential information for using state databases to research vehicles to be repossessed by Susan Schinstine's repossession service, the Okaloosa Sheriff's Office said. Glad to see he was well enough to do this while he was off on sick leave--being too fragile to perform his "Only One" duties had me worried there...

The incident as described indicates a level of negligence I would not expect from someone who has received even rudimentary gun safety training. At a time when survivors are hurting, I didn't want to exploit this with a flippant "Only Ones" title, but how an officer could make such a grave mistake is something I just can't fathom.

We're the Only Ones Non-Destructive Enough

Documents have surfaced regarding an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) involving the disappearance of approximately 500 firearms from Cleveland Police Department.

...The owner of Sportman’s Outlet, Gary Lee, met with investigating officers in November 2009, per the documents, and told them that Kelley had advised him he “could keep any firearms that he wanted from the CPD’s destruction orders rather than destroying them.” [More]

A Matter of Interpretation

In a 1997 book, "A Matter of Interpretation," Justice Scalia wrote that he viewed "the Second Amendment as a guarantee that the federal government would not interfere with the right of the people to keep and bear arms."

Yet, this next passage gives court watchers some pause. "Of course," Justice Scalia continued, "properly understood, it is no limitation upon arms control by the states."[More]
