Police say they can't explain why Singh, 35, was shot in the abdomen early Wednesday even after complying with the gunman's instructions to hand over his register's cash in a bag.

Down for the Count?

Two scholars say in a new research paper that despite earlier denials, the Census Bureau was deeply involved in the roundup and internment of Japanese Americans at the onset of U.S. entry into World War II. [More]

Just yesterday I got the idea for either a book or a screenplay. Here's the gist of it: it's an alternate history, along the lines of MacKinlay Kantor's "If the South Had Won the Civil War."

In my scenario, WWII is going badly for the Allies. America is beginning to experience the inability to feed its own population. It has no resources to send to feed or otherwise care for the Japanese-American internment camp prisoners, and will not just turn them loose back into the general population.

What "solutions" do we think could have developed under those circumstances?

Eh, another fantasy I'll probably never have time to give a second look to...I don't see where anyone else has developed this idea though--correct me if I'm wrong on that.

The device had fallen out of a Newport Beach police officer’s Chevy Tahoe after he forgot to shut the back door, according to a police report.

Now, Marcum and at least one other driver want the city of Newport Beach to pay to replace their tires. [More]

Why should the tax cows have to hoof the bill? No one seriously believe this is a training issue--that people have to be instructed that stuff can fall out the back if you don't close the door?

Why not make the "Only One" responsible pay for the damage his negligence caused?

People are lucky no one lost control of their vehicle and died or killed someone.

Privileged Willie

I was privileged to be invited by the leaders from the Highlands to accompany them on a weekend helicopter tour to one of their electorates the next morning. Seems to me those villagers treated you all a lot nicer than you deserved. A pig roast with a group of armed friends sure sounds like a good time to me.
