There is a proverb that states "When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem becomes a nail".
Police officers train to handle the worst possible outcome - armed opposition to their imposition of force to effect searches and arrests. If they condition their mindset to expect trouble, then wish fulfillment occurs, regardless of the reality.
The cost of doing otherwise is to let criminals go free to continue their activity. That is the cost of reducing the violence to the innocent. Be prepared to advocate this alternative to all elected officials. You are not being soft on crime. You are being merciful to those who have no invovement with the crime. Reduce "collateral damage" on the domestic front.
