I have a tough time with the word "accident" on stories like this. What an inexcusably stupid way to throw away your life and to devastate the ones who loved you.

He wanted to become a cop, so I guess he was practicing for the Lee Page award. I guess he was determined to throw his life away one way or another. You can't help someone like that.
You would think that someone smart enough to get into West Point would know a little bit about gun safety. He violated all 4 of the 4 rules.
He did just prove that you can fix stupid.
Phew, I wasn't able to get into the Naval Academy in the '60s but I'm smart enough not to point guns at my head.

Darwin award, for sure. A shame, but there it is.
You would need some training in firearms to understand what a magazine disconnect is. Part of that training would include treating all firearms as loaded, and never pointing the firearm at anything you do not want to destroy. For those who need to change magazines and still keep the firearm ready to fire during the magazine change, such as in a self-defense situation, magazine disconnects are not a safety feature.
