Greene instructed the two officers, General Edward Stevens, a Virginia militia officer and Colonel Edward Carrington to “explore carefully the River, the Depth of the Water, the Current and the Rocks, and every other Obstruction that will impede the Business of Transportation.” Greene also ordered one of the men to take a “horse and ride across the Country…to the upper Saura Town, and report the Distance and Condition of the Roads.” [More]
