Rochambeau, by orders of his own government under the command of Washington, was brought to New York, where, by feigned activity, Clinton was made to believe that he was to be besieged ; and finally, with admirable celerity, a combined American and French force numbering 6000 was moved to the head of Chesapeake Bay and thence by water to the James river, where it landed, and, joined by Lafayette, instituted the siege of Yorktown, September 2, 1781.
