Miers Carries?

From Dan Gifford via email:

MORE ON MIERS JUST IN FROM A GOOD DC SOURCE: "FYI the White House folks told me she owns a gun and has a concealed carry permit."

UPDATE: From Dan Gifford--
Just understand that I cannot personally verify that statement. Gene Volokh has checked with Texas and found she does not have one from that state. There are other state possibilities like Maryland and Virginia or she may have a Special US Marshal designation like some other DC VIPs. On the other hand, she may not have a gun or a CCW. All I can say for certain is that the statement came from a reliable DC source and that another DC lawyer on Volokh's blog described Miers as a gun toting evangelical.

The revelation that Miers "carries" is all and good for her, but it is also noted that Senator Diane Feinstein "carries" as well.

The question is, what influence has Harriet Miers actually accomplished for our right to keep and bear arms?

Agreed, Ken--I was just passing along the info as quickly as I could. I've noticed a lot in the 2A community acting as apologists for Miers--including names I respect. Sorry, but when I see the unfounded apologia and trust, all I can think of is "More Kool-Aid, please!"

I'm the only one I'm aware of who has expressed concern about her support for Project Safe Neighborhoods--probably because NRA management is a big supporter of the program.

I've seen some really good concerns about Miers expressed by Buchanan, Limbaugh, Coulter, Will and Frum.

The "positive" words being touted by Miers about rkba need--in my opinion-- to be compared to the big hooplah when John Ashcroft said 2A was an individual right--but he quickly qualified that by giving himself a "compelling state interest" loophole--and used that interest to trump "shall not be infringed" and oppose every case that came his way.

We know she supports federal gun prosecutions--even though that enumerated power is nowhere delegated to the feds in the Constitution. And if this report is true, we know she accepts permitting/licensing of unalienable rights--with their attendant registration and restrictions.

This does not give me confidence that we are dealing with a person who believes "shall not be infringed" means We the People are the Constitutional militia, or that "Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American ... the unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain,in the hands of the people."

David: Excellent analysis. Most gun control advocates begin their tirades with "I support the second amendment". What they really mean is: "I support the second amendment as it applies to me and according to my definition of 'common sense' regulation".

Rosie O'Donnell doesn't "believe" in guns...unless they are in the possession of her peronsal bodyguards. As Ken pointed out, Diane Feinstein doesn't think anyone should have guns...except her. Heck, even the Brady Campaign swears that they don't want to take our guns while working feverishly to take our guns.

I have remained silent to this point about the Miers nomination...partly because there's not a darn thing I can do about it (George will REALLY be upset if I tell him I won't vote for him next time, won't he)...partly because I just don't have enough information.

Much like the Robert's nomination and subsequent appointment, which, I might add, also drew the ire of many conservative talk show hosts, it's pretty much a done deal. Now the best we can do is hope that GW had some idea of what he was doing and didn't just throw us to the wolves for convenience sake.

Unfortunately, based upon his domestic record...it's a pretty thin hope.
