Reese lawyers reply to prosecutor move to deny assets for defense

For their part, the Reese family is preparing for the new trial the prosecutors would deny them, and need funds released so they can defend themselves against a legal opponent that enjoys virtually unlimited resources, and that has tried to further add to the family's crushing financial burden by moving to deny them the right to joint representation of their choosing. Firearm-Related Violence

In 2010, more than 105,000 people were injured or killed in the United States as the result of a firearm-related incident. Recent, highly publicized, tragic mass shootings in Newtown, CT; Aurora, CO; Oak Creek, WI; and Tucson, AZ, have sharpened the American public's interest in protecting our children and communities from the harmful effects of firearm violence. While many Americans legally use firearms for a variety of activities, fatal and nonfatal firearm violence poses a serious threat to public safety and welfare.

In January 2013, President Barack Obama issued 23 executive orders directing federal agencies to improve knowledge of the causes of firearm violence, what might help prevent it, and how to minimize its burden on public health. One of these orders directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to, along with other federal agencies, immediately begin identifying the most pressing problems in firearm violence research. The CDC and the CDC Foundation asked the IOM, in collaboration with the National Research Council, to convene a committee tasked with developing a potential research agenda that focuses on the causes of, possible interventions to, and strategies to minimize the burden of firearm-related violence. Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence focuses on the characteristics of firearm violence, risk and protective factors, interventions and strategies, the impact of gun safety technology, and the influence of video games and other media. I was hoping to do a GRE column on this, but a ton of other priorities have derailed that intent, at least for the time being, plus it ties in tangentially with another column I hope to be writing this week.

It's important that we keep apprised of this kind of stuff. The link I provide here takes you to a summary page where you can download a copy of the report.

SAF Radio Campaign

From SAF, via email:
In response to Mayor Michael Bloomberg's national anti-gun ad campaign, the Second Amendment Foundation today launched a public education and awareness effort on more than 160 radio station websites and the Fox News Radio website.

The audio spots and banner advertisements will run in conjunction with streamed nationally-syndicated talk radio programs including Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Gov. Mike Huckabee and Michael Medved, among others to explain its legal and educational efforts and encourage public support.

Major radio stations and markets will include WABC, New York City; KABC, Los Angeles; WBBM, Chicago; WNTP, Philadelphia; KLIF, Dallas; KGO, San Francisco; WBZ, Boston; WWRC, Washington, D.C., and markets in Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, Phoenix, Tampa, Minneapolis and Detroit.

A series of advertisements will air on "threats to firearms rights and SAF's response through litigation against unconstitutional gun laws."

We will highlight legal abuses of constitutional rights, and explain how we challenge such laws in the courts to protect our liberty. We've secured tens of thousands of dollars in advertising time to get our message to the public.

The effort is expected to reach millions of listeners, many who may be learning of SAF and its legal and educational programs for the first time.

If additional funds can be raised for this critical advertising effort, we will be able to continue and expand the campaign.

The thesis here seems to be if she can act like an irresponsible moron, anyone can, and without laws against being irresponsible morons, why, irresponsible morons will be irresponsible and moronic.  Or something.

I'd say if she gets through the 30 days without seriously hurting herself or someone else, she'll have made the opposite case she set out to establish.  Then again, if someone were to tell her that in order to safely draw and holster any gun, but especially a Glock, you should ALWAYS keep your finger on the trigger with a light pressure to prevent it from snagging on anything, I can't help but wonder ...
