Defining Deviancy Down

Students at the University of Virginia voted overwhelmingly last week to change the punishment for an honor violation - expulsion - reversing a policy known as the "single sanction" that has been in place for 180 years ... For the past 180 years, if a UVA student was found guilty of lying, cheating or stealing, there was only one punishment, expelling the student. [More]

What did Moynihan call this societal trend?

It Says So Right Here -- Except It Doesn't

Researchers have found that states with permitless carry laws have experienced an 11 percent increase in handgun homicide rates after enactment  [More]

Pretty definitive subhead, right?

Except the study he links to specifically notes:

Finally, we were unable to analyze the impact of permitless-carry laws because of the small number of observations. Only 4 states had permitless-carry laws in place during the study period. However, in the past 2 years, an additional 5 states have enacted such laws. Elucidating the impact of permitless-carry laws will require follow-up for the 9 states that now have such laws in effect.

We could get into the whole correlation/causation logical fallacy, the fact that permit holders are significantly more law-abiding than the "Only Ones," that criminals don't obey laws, and that homicides aren't homogeneously distributed throughout the population but concentrated among a hardcore lawless urban element, and that while rates can appear more impactful in lower-population areas, the real numbers in those high-population areas hardly reflect a prohibition success story.

Except there's no need to do that here because once it's been demonstrated this hoplophobic dweeb's either ignorant or lying, why waste any more time on him?

Here's a surprise: Columbus Alive is a Gannett Publication!

Let's see how they respond.

We're the Only Ones Preoccupied Enough

It took officers about 20 minutes to arrive after the homeowner called 911 because resources were tied up elsewhere in the East End ... One resident on Garber Street said he called 911 after hearing gunfire and that the phone rang about 25 times with no answer and no callback. [More]

No worries. Mayor Stoney's all about the fix!

Gaslighting Writ Large

US Merchant Marine experts say this decision doesn’t take into account the age and status of the United State’s Military Sealift Command tanker fleet, which are the ships responsible for at-sea refueling of both ships and aircraft. Shipbuilding experts find it very unlikely that Austin will be able to find the funding or the shipyards need to build a fleet of merchant tankers with “equally advanced and resilient fueling capability.” [More]

Congressman Cloud Introduces Bill to Dismantle Potential ATF Gun Registry

Congressman Cloud’s No REGISTRY Rights Act would require ATF to delete all existing firearm transaction records accumulated by the ATF, therefore dismantling their current database and preventing the possible creation of a federal gun registry. The bill would also require Federal Firearm Licensees (FFLs) to destroy their firearm transaction records once they go out of business, ensuring the ATF doesn’t continue to accumulate these records. We'll first have to see how the midterms go and then have to see if his Republican colleagues have learned anything since they had control last time. They'll also need to take the White House back in '24.

Standing Up to Bullies

"Imagine being falsely accused of threatening to shoot up a school. Law enforcement concluded that he was being pranked by fellow students, but that did not stop numerous parents from spreading the false accusation online," said Dhillon Law Group partner, Matthew Sarelson. "The students who spread the false accusations against Mr. Ortiz were never disciplined in any way. Only Mr. Ortiz was suspended, without due process, and for no valid reason." [More]

It figures a "progressive" school boasting "a safe learning environment" would be the biggest bullying abettor and enabler.

More Than, Say, Three Percent?

As the world witnesses what is happening to Ukraine, Americans were asked what they would do if they were in the same position as Ukrainians are now: stay and fight or leave the country? A majority (55 percent) say they would stay and fight, while 38 percent say they would leave the country. Republicans say 68 – 25 percent and independents say 57 – 36 percent they would stay and fight, while Democrats say 52 – 40 percent they would leave the country. “When confronted with a terrible hypothetical that would put them in the shoes of the Ukrainians, Americans say they would stand and fight rather than seek safety in another country,” added Malloy.
