The quick response - within seconds - came because a nearby sensor picked up the sound of the muzzle blast, pinpointed the shooter's location to within 10 feet and alerted police dispatchers of the address...The ShotSpotter system is only triggered by gunfire and it can discern the type of weapon (rifle, shotgun or handgun) being used. The software in the sensors also commands the surveillance cameras to rotate and focus on the spot where the shot was fired.

Now that is a truly horrifying technology as the greatest application that I can see for that is putting an end to the whole purpose of the 2nd amendment, in that it would make it very very difficult for the citizens to rise up if you can get an instant reprisal.
windaria, it could also be used as a lure to an ambush. works both ways.
However, I too, think this is not really a good thing. Makes me wonder how much longer your tv will only be a receiver. After all, look at the perversion of the OnStar system. The feds can listen to anything inside your car, even if the system isn't on. Sounds like the ravings of a paranoic until one realizes that it has already happened and has been upheld as legal by the courts.
Technology may very well prove to be the means of enslavement of the entire human race, yeah, us too.
Wonder if the system can tell the difference between gunshots and firecrackers? How about gun shots and two boards slapped together?
Nothing to do but test, I guess....
Re: using a amplifier and a recording to "fool" the system: not going to happen. An amp/speaker system that could mimic the sound energy envelope of a gunshot would be quite expensive if it is even possible - which I doubt. A gunshot consists of a very short duration, very high intensity, wide spectrum release of sound energy.
