The Letter

To Eric Holder.

From 65 Democrats.

No new ban.

Let's hope they mean it, and will not be persuaded by future headlines and political incentives or pressures to change their minds. [More]

Beyond excellent. Especially the part about "Many of our constituents own these weapons..." Many, many.
And the part explaining SEMI-automatic. I'm glad to know that they know the difference. Now if they could talk to the Senate.

I have to admit, the letter and its wording astonish me.

I was predicting a general Democratic blood-dance, and instead I get this. Are they just messing with my head, or what?

I may not agree with anything else democrats do, but I emailed both of my reps (WI) to show support for this letter. That being said, I have little faith that most of these reps will stand their ground when the party leaders start to threaten them.

Our party's position on gun legislation is finally evolving - and not a moment too soon.

I'll admit that I was really concerned about Barack Obama's campaign statements, about the wording of our 2008 platform, about the selection of Joe Biden as Obama's running mate, etc. But it is so refreshing to know that our Democratic legislators on Capitol Hill are waking up and speaking up.

No less than 65 House Democrats and nine Senate Democrats (Baucus, Begich, Casey, Feingold, Landrieu, Ben Nelson, Reid, Tester, and Webb) are on board to derail any new gun ban that's introduced on the floor. I hope Kirsten Gillibrand will shake off all the pressure from Schumer, McCarthy, and the Brady Camapign and make her own voice heard, too - her recent votes have been worrying me.

...until it becomes politically expedient...then if they stick by their resolution they get a gold star and some official props. Until then color me skeptical.
