We're the Only Ones Uncharged Enough

Charges against two Monterey County policemen arrested last summer in Mexico for alleged gun and ammunition smuggling have been dropped by a Mexican court.

...The Mexican court didn't explain why the charges were dropped, said presidio spokesman Eric Hamilton. [More]
Yeah, they could have just forgotten they had them. I suppose some might believe that. Still, does anyone think a non-"Only One" would have had the charges dropped without explanation?

Mind you, I'm not accusing anyone of threatening to talk, thereby implicating any Mexican official(s) as partners in whatever apparently was(n't) going on. That would be irresponsible without anything other than a gut feeling that this story stinks and I don't buy it for a second.

Perhaps I'd be less suspicious if we weren't being consistently lied to.

Also siezed were two packs of Jockey shorts, T-shirts and five pairs of socks. April Fools!
Why were the helmets, vest and knife siezed? I can understand the siezed guns and ammo, but was unaware that the other items were siezed for any other reason than that they were desirable.
