Anyone notice the part where she was denied assistance because her land was too valuable? This was Asset Forfeiture, pure and simple. The state wanted the land, and saw a way to take it. The destruction of this family was a side benefit. No independent thinkers allowed.

That is so sad. Why in God's name didn't any of the neighbors help this family?

If that was my daughter who called the cops and lied about the neglect in some sort of twisted "get even" scheme, she would be estranged from the family for the rest of my life.

I suppose any day now, Lon Horiuchi will be honored as child protector of the year. He ends all their troubles.

I remember this story well. I was managing editor for The Sierra Times then, and we covered it extensively. Too bad those archives are no longer available.

And indeed, think about the problems here for an isolated woman and her children. Work to form mutual aid and defense ties within a compatible community. Then, when the chips are down, you won't be standing alone.
