Well, complicating this case is the fact that he took his dad's gun and used it to murder the girl's parents, so dad's judgment becomes an issue here. Either he doesn't consider his son the wackjob that he is, or he doesn't feel it's important to secure his firearms in the presence of a wackjob. Tough call.

I think you're misreading the account, note how it referred to the father in two of the three preceding paragraphs as "Patterson Sr" and "Mr. Patterson", and in almost every case an unmodified "Patterson" is clearly referring to the criminal son, of course a product of a broken home, sounds like before and after the crime the one one who really cared about him was his biological father, granted joint custody but with a job with bad hours.

The other accounts I checked like this one don't even mention his father and brother attending, but include the no guns, no contact order. I take this as pro-forma conditions he'd be subject to should be make his $5 million bail.
