Well, I can tell he is not a history major because in most civil wars, a portion of the military breaks off and joins the rebels (or IS the rebels). I think of Russia and Spain in this regard because of their set-piece battles, although there are likely many more examples. Based on modern history, that part of the US military would join a rebellion is not impossible, but likely.
