As Good as It Gets

The Republican governor said in a veto message that the bill would place "redundant restrictions on firearms ownership while ignoring the larger problem of domestic violence." Current law requires officers to seize a person's weapons when there is probable cause to believe the person has committed domestic violence, said Christie, who vetoed a version of the bill last year. It would be nice if his veto message had mentioned rights, but I guess in New Jersey, certain realities are going to prevail for the foreseeable future.

We're the Only Ones Corrective Enough

The former state corrections officer who killed himself at a Lakewood gun range Monday was expected to be sentenced this week to three years in prison. [More]

Nice to know the type who will be guarding the new "criminals" Christie is intent on creating.

And this, of course, is the problem of making policy by grief -- you want to sympathize, but then they go and blame/attack everyone and every thing but the person responsible:

"My son went there by himself," his mother said, adding later: "That place should be shut down."

Naturally, there's an "Only Ones" exemption for the "alone" rule.
Still, just to be consistent, I suppose she'd demand the same if he'd hanged himself in her garage...?

I'm not sure what Christie's legal options are prior to a verdict, but he could certainly use his bully pulpit to condemn the prosecution and New Jersey gun laws, and pledge to work toward their repeal. [More]

Not that he will.  At heart, he's always been a gungrabber.

What I see as a likely outcome will be for him to commute her sentence afterward, like he did for Brian Aitken.  As we've noted before, that's not the same as a full pardon, so she'll still be a "prohibited person," and "legally" disarmed for the rest of her life by "public servants," whose prime directive is "to secure the Blessings of Liberty," and who are themselves well taken care of.
