How to Protect Yourself from Martial Law

If martial law is declared, your civil rights will no longer be recognized by the authorities; basic rights -- such as due process -- will no longer exist. How can you protect yourself...right now and afterward?
Interesting. But I think the first and third suggestions may contradict each other.

Suggestions 4,5 and 6 have contradictory points as well.

And one thing is overlooked completely. Don't stay in a big city! The cities are where the goons will be the most active and powerful. If you live in a small community well away from any city, you are not apt to run into the enforcers and your neighbors are much more likely to stand with you against them if they do come around.

If you are really interested in avoiding the worst of any martial law crackdown, get out of the city NOW.

Holy crap. Has martial law been declared? I'm already doing most of that stuff on the list!

I'd have to expand some things;

Train with your firearm BEFORE martial law, because you're unlikely to get an opportunity during.

Again, encrypt your data. Do this before martial law. PGP is available, free, and has foiled authorities before.

Some of these items require some preparation. Hopefully everyone here already know that, but I thought it bears repeating.

Nezumi,

What good is public key crypto without a trusted certificate authority?

"Do not wear T-shirts with political slogans or controversial sentiments."
A Virginia woman was arrested on election day for showing up at the polls with a McCain T-shirt on after the state election commission issued an edict prohibiting political apparel. Her second court hearing is soon.
Someone had to come up with that crackbrained idea. Someone had to enforce it. Lots of people had to watch it happen. More people will decide in court if it was right.
Break the chain.
Eight of our early presidents were from Virginia. You know, when the Constitution meant something.

I retract my previous comment. I thought it was regarding communication, not files in place.

On topic:

Without being preceded by open rebellion or an invasion, and not immediately followed by activation of the Militia, a "declaration" of "Martial Law" is more accurately described as an attempted overthrow of the government. What immediately follows is usually rule by military junta.

In this country, law established government. "Martial Law" implies the replacement of current law with something else. Replacing that which defined the form of our government therefore falls in the category of overthrowing the current government, with the exception of Article V powers.

I might be reading too much into it, but it seems to me that the current connotation of "Martial Law" assumes that only the people outside of the government will be the guilty party. Since the law is distinct from the people (and their opinions of the law) who labor to maintain the government, it is not outside the realm of possibility for a member of government to undermine it.

I make no accusations. Just pointing it out.

Nezumi-

I need education! What is PGP, and where do I learn about it?

TJP is spot on. If this country is a nation of the people, by the people and for the people. If martial law becomes the law the people have lost their government and their rights.
If the government has engaged in criminal conduct the people have every right to protest that criminal conduct and demand that those in power be removed. If those in power use force against the will of the people through martial law, the criminal conduct runs deeper. If the boys and girls in the military go along with the treasonous conduct of the criminals in power. They too become criminal because they have dishonored their oath to the Constitution.
Bottom line: Martial law would be a huge mess.
