I just finished re-reading George Orwell's 1984 for the first time in 25 years. It seemed timely, for some reason.
In the book, one of the things The Party does to maintain control is breakdown the ability of people to rely on reason and logic. The same thing is at work in Chicago, and, come January 20, in Washington DC.
The message of 1984 is that some day a totalitarian system might exert such power and control that it can't be challenged, so we should do our challenging now, while we can.
If every gun owner would fight back a little harder in non-violent ways, maybe violence could be avoided.
Great point George- once during the the "debates" Hillary was asked a question, and her reply was truly Orwellian, and no one batted an eylash. She said:

If they're "illegal" how could the be regulated? Interstate commerce crap on the black market now too? Internal checkpoints for travel?
Prohibit all violent criminals from possessing firearms
Since that's already a law...and as David points out if they're so dangerous why are they out there amongst the prey? Might it have something to do with your actions Jackson? You and your racist asshats bray about the black population in prison and have made it so they can be let out on "good" behavior.
If this POS had any honesty in him he'd huffing a tailpipe in a sealed garage and spare the world his stupidity and damage.
I just wish someone would wake that Asshat up and let him know that if him and his congregation payed more attention to their kids instead of blaming guns for everything maybe things would be different. Someone also needs to point out all of the places that gave concealed carry and the amount of crime in comparison to the murder capital of the US.

It's too bad that there is no way to comment on the site. I think it would be handy to point out that by the disarmer's own logic, the recent registration extension would produce a list of likely suspects for the recent increase in crime. No accusations here, since those have already been made by the disarmers!
Regarding the "prohibit all violent criminals" part, I think that means that Jackson wants people with convictions for violent misdemeanors (e.g. misdemeanor assault) to be prohibited from firearms ownership, in addition to people with felony convictions. There's something to be said for that; quite a few well publicized homicides the past few years have been committed by people who'd managed to plea-bargain violent felony charges down to misdemeanors. I'm not willing to dismiss that possibility out of hand.
The rest of that list seems pretty pointless, however. That is, pointless in the sense that they will not make things harder for criminals seeking to arm themselves. I'm in favor of background checks in an abstract sense, but for the vast majority of crime guns, a law requiring a background check would just be one more law that gets broken when a fence or straw purchaser sells a gun to a bad guy.
Of course, this list would make life more difficult for legal gun owners. Which, let's face it, is the real point of it.

It seems that one of the consequences of inappropriate sentencing is that "gun law" is expected to take up the slack. This irks me because it effects a wide swath of the population who aren't repeat offenders and violent criminals of the nastiest variety. The gun charges are often dropped--probably because it would be a waste of time to pursue them.
Since absolutist, lifetime prohibition of weapons possession is tied to felony crimes--and the included crimes are subject to tinkering--that's one of the mechanisms by which Citizens become "prohibited persons".
That's my thinking on the matter, but your point is solid. Duly noted.
