I never realized that US Customs and INS existed to restrict exports of material and people TO Mexico. I thought that US Customs and INS existed to restrict what was coming FROM Mexico. I guess a porous border works both ways.

Mexico has its own problems, however I believe they have the right idea about elections. Forget 'em, just have a revolution every few years. If you want a political office challenge the incumbent to a duel. The winner gets the office, the loser gets a small dirt plot. problem solved and cheaply. And they don't have to put up with the perennial politicians.
But, the entire problem is our fault. One can purchase hand grenades, fully auto weapons, claymores, nukes, ... from any gun shop in the US. Right!!!

The article asks: "Why is the United States backing Mexican drug gangs?" Uh huh. Why are they also backing corrupt Mexican police? Why are we interfering at all? But wait, the author answers those questions: because we tried to "ban" drugs, and the manufacturers have built their own government--complete with a standing army--to secure an income of 12 billion dollars a year.
As for the author's assertion that the "U.S. government does little to stop [the drug trade]", the DEA was budgeted for 2.34 billion in 2007. This is up from 1.58 billion when Bush took office. This is only the DEA's budget, and doesn't reflect the money and resources used by the DOJ and state police troops to discover and prosecute users and traffickers, and it doesn't include the costs of incarcerating the convicted. Americans have also paid a tremendous cost by surrendering their liberties to the War on Drugs.
Do "Latin America[n]" studies include economics?
I don't know about economics, but they obviously don't include ethics. Or honesty. Or any of that troublesome stuff that gets in the way of blaming someone else.
