NV Senate Candidate Mike Wiley Answers Gun Questionnaire

Nevada Senate contender Mike Wiley has answered the political questionnaire I developed to elicit unequivocal answers about where a candidate stands on the right to keep and bear arms. [More]
This morning's Gun Rights Examiner column brings us responses from yet another candidate in the crowded field contending for Harry Reid's vulnerable seat.

"I am not aware of any gun laws at this point that need to be repealed." And he's for registration. Just another tax burner that doesn't understand "shall not be infringed" or that criminals don't obey his laws.

on the issue of repealing gun laws at the national level, he might not be aware of much of them at all. after all, there are 20,000 or so across the land, and all the worst ones come from municipalities, counties and states. assuming he is informed, wiley clearly believes that the GCA and NFA are strictly for the "prevention" issues he supports: denying criminals of RKBA. i can't get behind that whether or not criminals should be denied RKBA. i feel it should be obvious that in the absence of a single "gun law," no known criminal would be stupid enough to do anything more than carry concealed for self-defense. you'd be shot dead if you risked being confrontational. (where you going with that rifle? hunting? up to no good.)

i suspect national life would be better that way. c'est la vie.

wiley does not support "registration," but i needed to read his answers twice to get it straight. so do you.

he supports a "licensing" process where you take a "shooter's test," exactly the same as the "driver's test" system for people who want to use vehicles (not necessarily own them). as far as i know, you can take the road test without so much as going to a driving school, in any state. is there a registry of people who have taken road safety tests which i have never heard of?

of course there is a driver's license registry, and it requires that you have taken the test to enrolled on it, but the registry itself is not required to administer road tests whatsoever, and it is clear that that was never its intended purpose. it does not follow that he supports a "shooter's license" on the grounds that he supports a "RKBA test." it is not clear to me by the survey that this is the case, either. in fact, i mean that to his detriment: why isn't this clear?

fortunately one thing is clear: he states plainly that he does not support registering either vehicles or guns. this is what "registration" usually refers to: registering ownership of a firearm. this has nothing to do with shooting it to the extent the license plate on your car has nothing to do with driving it. i cannot see how any sane firearms owner could ever support registration of someone else's car, but not of his own rifle.

presumably at some extreme wiley would support registration of inanimate objects -- perhaps highly enriched uranium deemed "weaponized" -- but this is just a presumption of mine.

so there is a lack of clarity. another issue that bothers me is the poor answer to the last question. that could have just been a paragraph below an unequivocal answer.

finally, the emphasis on political connections, in general, seems trite. no i do not trust you because you have earned accolades from larry pratt. you know, i'm friends with larry on facebook. where's my u.s. senate seat? poor show, chap.

last but not least, let's deal with the issue of posting as "anonymous" to deride a political candidate's platform during the run-up to a race in which it's obvious his competitors are all aware that they are being covered by the same blog.

shall we?

Whether you call it licensing or registration it boils down to the same thing, begging gov for permission and paying fees. Why isn't it clear??
