Calling guns in bars a "recipe for disaster," the state's police chiefs have pleaded with Gov. Bob McDonnell to veto legislation that would ease Virginia's concealed weapon laws.Well, of course he did. Because the recipe doesn't call for putting him in the same pot:

Just ask Anthony Abbate (if you dare to step in and drag him off that girl half his size). Or since we're talking Virginia establishments and exempting feds, too, why not see what Joseph Armento has to say?
Y'know, if we're really serious about this, we'd best just ban guns in the home, where many gun owners also keep beer, wine and liquor, where emotions are known to run high in the course of daily life, and where many incidents of hidden domestic violence occur! For the children! "Only Ones" exempted, of course.
Maybe if they veto this, the governor and the chiefs can share a few laughs at their subjects over some drinks. Then go out in the parking lot and maybe see who's tougher.

Yep. My state doesn't ban firearms in bars and we have lethal shootouts, gunslinger duels all the time.
Oh, wait. No we don't. The only bar shooting I recall offhand was an armed customer defending the bouncer from a drive-by shooting. In fact, about the only place guns aren't allowed is court rooms. And we have the lowest firearms death rate in the country, according to the DOJ.
Am I missing something, or does the Va statute bar drinking by the CCW holder?
I thought the law simply allowed CCW in a place where liquor was sold.
I am not sure how the nexus came about with DUI.
Does this mean that Virginia ABC stores cannot sell alcohol to customers who drive to the outlet?
Obviously, if this clownshoe sheriff doesn't trust ccw where alcohol is served - he cannot possible trust ABC customers to make it home without cracking open the Wild Iris Rose.
Yes - as written the bill prohibits the CHP holder from drinking while carrying. Unless, of course, you are an "only one". Oddly, no issues if you drink while carrying openly. No mention of that in the law.
As far as carrying while purchasing items from an ABC store, the law as written only pertains to places where you can drink alcohol on premises. ABC stores generally do not allow you to consume in the store, so that's not an issue.
