Can police 'gun snitch' programs backfire?

I guess all those Australian "gun control" measures we heard about a few years back haven't worked?

They seem to be willing for innocent people to die, "as long as it (potentially, theoretically) saves just one life."

Been a while since we read about the Australian "hoon" gangs. Illegal road races, guns, drugs and alcohol, and they take over communities, beaches, shopping centers. "Mad Max" was science fiction, until Australians submitted to gun control.
