A Matter of Perception

The rural community hopes a killer is found so they can once again feel safe. [More]
Time was, a rural community would mobilize and, you know, be safe.

David, I had to laugh at this one. Most likely, the law enforcement "spokesperson" made that statement.

Thinking about the rural area in which I live, these guys wouldn't last an hour, much less days. Seldom is there a single day in which gun fire isn't heard around here. I have my own 25 yard range, longer ranges are available on neighbors property (I have 11 acres, he has 42). Coon hunting is routine here, I'm armed 24/7 no matter where I am.

So, these guys or any like them, would not fair well here.

I look forward to the day when that will be the case everywhere.

Years ago my grandmother, widowed, and living alone on a farm on the outskirts of a small Texas town was wakened from her sleep by the sound of someone pounding on the door. A few locals had gotten liquored up and went out for a ride. At some point they found themselves outside the farmhouse and were demanding to be let in.

Grandma never found out if they intended her harm, or if they just needed directions; once she answered the door, shotgun in hand, they thought better of their rowdiness, got back into the car and sped off...

Here's what we're dealing with. An 81-year-old woman in a rural county near here lost the sight in one eye from being beaten by an intruder. The athletic young man caught with her few meager valuables and her blood on his shoes and clothes said he went there to rob her only. Someone else must have come and assaulted her.
They can justify anything.
