It Can't Happen Here

Remember this provincial bigot?

The one who's big rebuttal was:
How many incidences of violence where someone needed a gun to protect themselves in the 38 years of the fair have there been? Zero!

Well, lookee here:
Man in Jets jersey robs Manhattan Beach bank
Apparently a note and a green shirt is all it takes when you're disarmed and conditioned to give 'em what they want (hoping against hope what they want isn't you).

And look where it happened:

The yellow is the bank.  The purple is the area of the fair from the initial link (and, incidentally, the place where I first conceived the "Authorized Journalist" concept). The red is my old condo.

Many's the time I hitched feral then-toddlers Uday and Qusay to the stroller and made them haul loads of bricks up that hill...

Hey, I'll bet Sharon Tate thought she lived in a pretty safe neighborhood, too. I'll bet she and her friends had never seen anything like that there before...

All it takes is once.

There was a shootout between rival gangs at the Texas State Fair a while back. A friend of mine was 10 feet from it when it started, and all he could do was grab the lady that was with him and take cover.

These days, they have metal detectors at every entrance, and if you have CHL, you can show a supervisor your permit and walk right in armed. While I know the feelings on permits to exercise natural rights, at least they're allowing carry (no unpermitted open carry in Texas...yet).
