Still Under the Weather...

Believe me, I'm more sick and tired of it than anybody.

The good news is I'm on the mend. The bad news is, overdoing it would be stupid. So expect less for a while.

As such, I'm going to be doing an abbreviated set of posts, to give you some of what others of you want me to talk about (and I won't mind if the emails slow down a bit for a while longer--honest), and stuff I want to point out.

In the interests of making my job as effortless as possible, please forgive me if I don't get to your submission, and also if I don't go through the detail work of adding links to contributor names.

Together, we shall persevere through these dark days...or some such.

As always, please do what you can to evangelize my Examiner columns. I know I sound like a nag, but really--it's not like I have a tip jar or anything, and regulars here want to see me be able to feed feral sons Uday and Qusay their daily crust of bread, I trust...?

It looks like the entire culture has been infected with mistrust. No wonder they don't trust each other with guns--spouses don't even trust each other with computers.

Just like they did with the Holder nomination!

And I guess Olofson and Fincher aren't legitimate concerns.

Explosive Revelations

The vans included homemade explosive devices connected to remote detonators, firearm silencers and jugs filled with sulfuric acid, a known agent for accelerating the decomposition of a body, authorities said.

CSI Akron

A judge has ruled that the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office must change its autopsy findings to remove all references to the Taser stun gun as a contributing cause of death in the cases of three men who died during encounters with county law enforcement officers.

In one of those cases — the August 2006 death of 28-year-old county jail inmate Mark D. McCullaugh Jr. — the judge ruled the manner of death must be changed on the official autopsy report and death certificate, from ''homicide'' to ''undetermined.''
Because we all know tasers have proven themselves 100% safe and reliable. "The Only Ones" and corporate lawyers tell us so.

I think Judge Schneiderman may be on to something though--think how much money Summit County can save if it does away with the medical examiner's office altogether, and just lets him rule on how homicide victims died.

A "Privilege" Delayed

Those applying for a CCW today can expect to wait until August or September until the application is processed, he said. [More]
So does that establish a legally-recognized "special relationship," where the department has a duty to protect throughout the interim, and with enforceable consequences should it fail?

No?

I didn't think so.

Tightening their Death Grip

The Los Angeles City Council approved a package of gun control laws Wednesday...
Click on the title link and read this.

Then watch the video.

They say they intend this to be the model for the nation.

Anybody think these tyrants are interested in peaceable resolution, or will ultimately be moved by anything short of pure self interest?

Look at Bratton claiming .50 cal "Only One" primacy. And talking "Godzilla." What an ass.

And Villaraigosa--guy can't even control his own di...libido as he gets cover from the watchdog press...but he wants to control you and me.

Then there's Jack Weiss. "Make our day?"

Perhaps, Jack. Some of us lived through seeing LA paralyzed, ceding entire neighborhoods to the zombie hordes--and that was in response to acts of government. And guess what, Jack--I went about my business every day armed in defiance of you frauds. Don't think I was alone.

Imagine what an act of nature or mass destruction will do to your smugness. The only good thing will be to expose you and your partners in crime for the powerless wretches you truly are when you don't have a cadre of enforcers on immediate hand to do your bidding.

Meanwhile, "our side" is left with arguing the new edicts "either conflict with or are duplicated by state law." Which means even if we "win," it's OK if it comes from Sacramento? Even though every one of us knows what an infringement is, but that can't even be argued?

And here's the real chiller--telling a man he can't run for city attorney unless he divests himself of all affiliation from NRA. Everyone gets how Nazi-caliber evil that is, right?

That's more than an in your face to all gun owners. If you think about it, it's taxation without representation.

These evil bastards will make war on us ideologically, politically, legally and physically. They won't stop until they're stopped. They won't let us alone and they won't let us live in peace.

If you're looking for a democratic solution in Los Angeles, forget it. Majority rule says "No."

So it will be interesting to see where the legal challenge goes.

If that doesn't work, then what?

Appeal to Obama's Justice Department?

A Matter of Ceremony

A charge of carrying a dangerous weapon was dismissed against a Sikh man arrested in Kern County with a ceremonial dagger in his possession.
Good.

If we have equal protection under the law combined with "no laws respecting establishment of religion," I'm sure I can do the same, right?

The One

With almost no debate, the council voted 6-1 to pass Councilman Zack Scrivner's resolution encouraging the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that the Second Amendment provides an individual right to bear arms, and that no government should be able to infringe on that right.

...The sole dissent came from Councilwoman Sue Benham, who said the resolution was just another attempt by a council member to make a political statement. She said as an elected official, she supports the Second Amendment and the rest of the Constitution.
I remember many years back helping represent the Second Amendment contingent by marching in the US Constitution Day parade in the People's Republic of Santa Monica with other members of the Westside Firearms Association (soon to become the NRA Members Council of Westside Los Angeles), as well as my wife and two young children. Of many insults and obscenities hurled at us by the urban Marxist worthies as we passed, the one I remember most vividly was "Go Back to Bakersfield!"

Yes, Councilwoman Benham, resolutions are political statements, but you're not against all of them--for instance, when other council members wanted to declare that Bakersfield would endorse English and not be a "sanctuary city," you had no problem offering "a competing proposal...to recommend that the federal government enforce its laws."

So don't give us that. You're demonstrably not against resolutions per se. Just the ones you don't support, like the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

Like Tip O'Neill famously said, "All politics is local." The council sets the tone for the community, and what they do or do not endorse sets a leadership example for the voting constituents.

I again recall, a couple years later, a subversive on the Redondo Beach city council proposed a resolution of support for the state of California's proposed new (the Perata "features" version--the Roberti-Roos "model" version being deemed not tyrannical enough) "assault weapons" ban. Showing up in force, speaking request cards filled out and speeches ready, the cowards first moved it to the end of the agenda hoping they'd lose us from attrition, and then decided not to vote on the matter.

So your sole refusal to support the resolution should be noted, Ms. Benham, and Bakersfield gun owners should react accordingly when you run for future office. And hollow protests of support for "the Second Amendment and the rest of the Constitution" notwithstanding (and I can point to any number of politicians who make that claim, right before revealing their big "but"), your true agenda is being just another in a long line of self-aggrandizing democrat operatives ruining the promise of what once was "The Golden State."

As an aside: citizen activists are not doing themselves any favors remaining oblivious to the workings of local government. I recommend having your city government website bookmarked and knowing where to access agendas for upcoming meetings and minutes of past ones, so that you know who to support and who not to, and when organized attendance is required. No, I'm not suggesting becoming a cable TV meeting junkie--this can be monitored and accomplished in about 5 minutes each week, with organized responses limited to an "as needed" basis.

We're the Only Ones High and Mighty Enough

"People don't get it," Holcomb said. "When you go to an airport, the only people that can carry a gun are federal agents."
Demonstrably untrue.

You can also get away with it if you're an anti-gun mayor.

But you're right, I don't get it. That's why I post stories about "The Only Ones."

I also like the presumption that "it was not clear why he was carrying it," as if exercising rights demands an explanation. By the same token, I can't get too worked up over this. If Dennis Farina spent 20 years in the Chicago PD, I have to believe he was a willing part of a machine that grinds people up every day for similar "crimes"--speaking of which, let's see if state charges for illegal concealed carry are also pressed--as they would be against you or me.

UPDATE: HZ points out the ex-Chi-Town cop was flying to handgun-free Chicago.

The ensuing downpour ruined computers and desks. A damage estimate wasn't immediately available. [More]
Hey, but the good thing is, " the sergeant whose weapon discharged will likely face discipline within the department."

"Likely"?

So that must be what we could expect if we had a similar mishap in a police station?

How Many (Ignorant?) Lies...

...can "Authorized Journalist" Maureen Downey cram into 774 words?

Let's see, she's never heard of GCA '68 for out-of-state purchases, doesn't know about dealers being required to do background checks at gun shows, and, rather than being spontaneously "given rise" as implied, "iron pipeline" is a propaganda term invented to poison opinion against family business lawsuit defendants and to undermine...what is it the Brady's so vociferously argue for in DC?...oh, yeah, "home rule." And this is just the third paragraph.

Let's Hope These Don't Turn Out to Be Death Sentences

The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled school employees may carry guns on the job only if they have "satisfactorily completed an approved basic peace-officer training program" or have "20 years experience as a peace officer." [More]

So the law needs to be changed?

But three of the four in the Republican majority dissented, with the most cogent observation being:

"By a plain reading, R.C. 109.78(D) does not prohibit Madison Local from authorizing school staff employed in nonsecurity-related positions to legally carry weapons on school property without having to satisfy the peace officer-training requirements".

That means if some maniac decides to take advantage of the "gun-free zones" and slaughter children, blood will be on the hands of the three Democrats (no surprise there) and "Republican" Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor, who is slated for mandatory retirement next year and doesn't have to worry about the "justices" in Ohio being elected.
