My guess is somebody needs to check their reload measurements. They're damned lucky they didn't lose a hand or more.

A buddy of mine lost a Smith & Wesson Model 29 the same way. Not a scratch on him, but parts flew everywhere. S&W pooh-poohed his claim, but Leupold replaced his scope for free. I've done more business with Leupold and less with S&W since then.

A friend of mine also lost a model 29 the same way.

Seems he had his scale set for 22 grains instead of 12 - and 22 grains of Unique was more than his S&W could take.

I can't blame S&W for not replacing the piece. Few guns are guaranteed against loads generating three or four times the proof pressure.
