Dare I Speculate?

Siretha Woods, whose daughter was killed last month by stray gunfire, also called on guns to be relinquished. Siretha White, 10, was struck by a stray bullet at her surprise birthday party in an Englewood home. Police have said the intended target was someone standing on the porch.

"I got 11 more kids," Woods said. "Let's let the rest of them grow up."
12 kids in all? Different last names from you? Grammar indicating lack of education? An intended target was on your porch, an invited guest to one of your parties?

Siretha, I don't suppose any of your life choices have contributed to a culture where stuff like this happens...?

Not going there with you,David. There is no excuse for shooting a 10 year old girl, no matter who else did what.

There is no excuse for the cowardice of a drive-by shooting. There is no excuse for drive-by shooters to expect to be able to make it to the end of the block without being shot to doll rags. That is the real problem here.

Lack of education doesn't mean you love your kids less. Poor life choices doesn't mean your kids should be shot, unless of course they are in a car and shooting at people.

It would be nice to see someone in her circumstance organize a neighborhood armed committee of first responders to outlaw shooters. Defense of self and innocent neighbors is still allowed and should become de riguer in all our neighborhoods. I expect she will call for all the innocent to be even more helpless and I will help you rail against that and fight against that.

I won't blame her or the little girl for the acts of monsters. I will even help you call her stupid and short-sighted if she does as we suspect she will and point out that the conditions she calls for is what gives the power to the killers.

I'm with David on this one.

This woman has seemed to have made a series of choices in her life that accentuated the risk to her and her children.

I would hazard a guess that the intended target of the shot that tragically killed that poor little girl was meant for someone involved in some shady stuff.

When you hang around with bad characters bad things happen. She put her daughter in proximity to danger, in a bad environment her choices had terrible consequences.

Not excusing it, SA, I agree there is no excuse. That said, what cultural conditions contribute to the development of monsters like those who did the shooting?

Until those conditons are addressed--and many of them are largely reflective of poor choices and decision making, this type of underclass from which gang violence springs will continue to exist.

Siretha wants to place the blame on guns. I place the blame on the monsters who did the crime, but can't ignore that certain conditions are more conducive to monster propagation than others.

I will stand with your last paragraph.

As I said, stupidity would be to campaign for more helplessness. The gangbangers we have now will have to be killed. It is too late to save them. No parental discipline up till they are shooting people, means they are beyond salvation. Arm entire neighborhoods and kill the gangbangers, when they show. If one can't shoot one's own bad progeny, let the neighbor do it.

No amount of good choices will undo the monsters we have already made. So we divest ourselves of them and make no more.
