Ultimately, “a school is no place for a gun,” he concluded.
The author was Columbine killer Eric Harris, who chose “Guns in Schools” for his report topic. It’s not hard to see why he would favor “gun free school zones.”
"Guns in Schools" is my Rights Watch column for the November 2006 issue of GUNS Magazine, available now at scholarly newsstands throughout the Republic.

I'll pick up the mag on my way home from work.
Until then can I assume that your article is calling for a requirement that all schools receiving federal funding provide mandatory firearms safety, handling and marksmanship classes for all students? That these classes be taught by NRA certified instructors?
Now that would be a large pill for the left to swallow :)
JR,
I won't presume to say what David will say. But for myself I would prefer that government stay the heck out of the matter altogether.
The whole notion of a school as a "Gun Free Zone" is as stupid as telling lions that watering holes are a predation free zone. It can only be an encouragement.
Predators (both the two and four legged variety) prefer their prey helpless.
Predators do not obey rules to make themselves helpless...not ever. Only prey would even consider such a thing.
Nope, JR--I can't find a thing in the Constitution regarding federal funding for any education, or federal mandates in that regard, either. Me, I'm a big believer in separation of school and state. But that's not part of my article.
Yes, I DO mention NRA, that is, Wayne LaPierre and Sandra Froman--basically, I want them to stop siding with Eric Harris and opposing guns in schools.
David,
Do you get any brownie points if I subscribe to Guns magazine? You should, I finally mailed in my subscription today. You are the biggest reason I did it.
By the way, I can't wait to see the blood dance after today's events in Colorado.
My previous post did not come across the way I intended. I was being facetious.
I am also big on the separation of school and state, and there is no way the .gov would require shooting sports in public schools. Heck, even the land grant colleges are reducing or doing away with the shooting sports.
JR-Understood. Wasn't sure how much stuff here you'd seen as it's something I harp on frequently.
Wild Deuce--no brownie points unless you tell them, which I always encourage. My editor told me someone called him the other week to let him know essentially the same thing.
Basically, if you like what you see here and want me to feed my kids, buy the mag and tell 'em why. Or if you hate my stuff, also tell 'em--at least they'll know it's being read.
You know David, I think I will do just that.
I do sometimes get "Guns" if an article strikes me as interesting (not always the case for me I'm not into the "plastic fantastic" tactical stuff too much anymore), but I do like the stories on occasion.
More to the point, I often read G&A solely for Cooper, and I often read Guns solely for your articles.
I'm sure I'm not alone in doing so either. There aren't many writers that warrant such interest on my part.
You do us all a service, keep up the good work.
I finally found a copy of Guns (ended up going to Barns and Noble). Excellent article David and well worth the hunt. It is also very timely in light of recent high school shooting incidents.
Thanks
I realize that (prob'ly) contractual obligations preclude you from publishing your GUNS columns online, but it's really frustrating for those of us who'd like to share them with others, particularly this latest which was so very prescient.
You are correct, Mr. Cromwell, FMG Publications owns the copyright. They put them up on their site a month later, and I always link to them.
If you go to the Guns Magazine link on my blogroll to the left and click on it, you can scroll down to "Rights Watch" and get last month's column.
I'll be sure and post when this latest goes up. In the mean time, this isn't the first time I've written in the mag about this subject.
