Well of course David, you silly. The new Norte Amerikan Union (of socialist repuklics) won't be 'safe' otherwise. And we all know how 'essential' safety is, in comparison to alienable liberty, right?

Given that American-trained, American-equipped elite anti-drug units of the Mexican Federal Police (the so-called Zetas) have gone over to the drug barons, it stretches credulity that Mexican cartels are cruising American gun shows looking for SEMI-automatic arms. There is no reason to bother with American gun shows: money, followed by contact with key individuals in the Mexican Ministry of Defense, can secure all the fully AUTOMATIC firearms these cartels could possibly want. The assertion made in the original article is laughable on its face...
I think you are missing the point. It's NOT the drug gangs who they are worried about being armed. It's the common folks who regularly travel up to work, buy stolen merchandise, drag it home with them for mom and dad to defend themselves against the bad guys. THAT'S what's got the Federales' knickers in a twist.
They KNOW the drug gangs are armed and as long as the political elite don't mix it up with the drug elite everyone plays nice. It's the ordinary Juan Q. Publico they don't want having guns! Same here, same everywhere.
