I call them "assault" rifles, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them "terrorist" rifles.I know resorting to ad hominem attacks is inferior to attacking the idea, but Jim Zumbo's arguments are so damned stupid, ignorant and downright treasonous, I can't help but consider the source.
This is "one of the country's most well known and respected outdoorsmen"? He might as well be writing Brady press releases.

I've heard the same thing from better writers. Hopping aboard the commie-train to assure that our good ole' hunttin' arms remain untouched is nothing less than a cowards plea to be left alone when they come to take the guns. Shame that we must fight from within this way and waste an effort that should be directed towards the real enemy, but the ephiphany has at long last sunk in and I do suppose that he and his ilk have been the enemy for some time, masquerading as honest gun folk.
Leaving a comment after Zumbo's manifesto is kind of satisfying (I know I felt better once I did), but it might be more valuable to drop a line to his editors, telling them that Zumbo is costing them subscriptions.
This is astounding but, in some ways, I'm not too terribly surprised. Country club shotgunners have been looking down their collective noses at rifles with cosmetic features to make them resemble mil-spec weapons for years.
Normally, I'd advocate a boycott of all things Zumbo here, fifth columnist that he is, but I'd rather see all of the 2A rights groups put their efforts into educating this misguided soul. He obviously hasn't a clue that the only hope for ALL gun owners is the unequivocal support of the 2A as an absolute, inviolable right.
If, after an intensive campaign of exposing Zumbo to the light of truth he still doesn't get it, boycott him into the stone age.
One thing I wonder about is if this will have any effect on him, as a hunting writer, getting to go on all of those sponsored (free?) hunts he makes his living from. If the education thing doesn't work, and I'm not too hopeful it will, I advocate not using any of the outfitters he uses and letting said outfitters know why you won't be booking a hunt with them. And, of course, not buying any book or periodical his writing appears in (be sure you let the publisher know why you aren't buying their product).

Can anyone verify whether or not Zumbo writes for the NRA's Shooting Illustrated magazine?
If so, I think the NRA has some explaining to do.
I used to run into guys like Zumbo when I lived in Massachusetts...guys with tweed hunting jackets and impressive collections of bespoke English and Italian side-by-sides. One such privileged individual once said to me, "You handgun types are paranoid. The government will never take away our sporting guns." I suspect that Zumbo, like many hunting writer types, is so used to having his ass kissed by gun and ammo manufacturers that he has lost the ability to think.
Education won't help this jerk. At the age he is, in the field he is in, and writing about gun and hunting issues for decades, if he doesn't know any better than to write crap like he just did, he is uneducable.
Emotional crippling is an ugly thing to see in another, especially if it results in arrogance of the incompetent.
He's now apologized. And at least making an effort to get to know ARs.
Sincerity is questionable to say the least.
