Dodge City, Indiana

A customer at a grocery store stopped an armed robbery by pulling his own gun and holding the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived, authorities said.

Now see, if he'd been unarmed, we wouldn't have to tolerate this cowboy mentality recklessness. After all, we have a right to feel safe, don't we?

David, your linked article states the perp put down his weapon "after a moment". Something I found interesting is , according to the article in The Indianapolis Star, http://www.indystar.com, the officer who filed the report stated that after good guy pointed his weapon at bad guy, bad guy hesitated, then good guy racked his slide to chamber a round, and THEN bad guy put his gun down. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad all turned out well, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why anybody would ever consider pointing a weapon at someone in an obviously life threatening situation WITHOUT a round already in the chamber. At the very least, that round should have been chambered the moment he cleared his holster. IMO, he could have turned a happy ending into a nightmare very quickly.

If the Indy Star got it right, then our hero violated several rules of self-defense. My instructors told me to carry my weapon with a round in the chamber and a full magazine, with a spare mag on my belt.

Nothing guarantees that I'll have both hands available to make my gun ready the instant I need it.

Not all of us choose to carry with a round in the chamber. Is it better to have one in the pipe? Of course. But I choose not to. I carry using an IWB holster, very close to the family jewels, and my choice of firearm does not have any external safties. To compensate I practice my draw with a quick pull of the slide.
