Whenever the courts attempt(ed) to question an expansion of the power of the federal government, they were told to get in line or else. (See: Agricultural Adjustment Act.) So that's exactly right: No one is allowed to question that liberty is bad for public safety.
Screw it, let's do some questioning:
* Did New York City become safer for the public after the Sullivan Act of 1911?
* Did New Jersey become safer after the state took over control of all firearms transactions in 1966, for "public safety" reasons?
* Did crime disappear after the NFA of 1934 was passed?
* Did crime disappear after the GCA of 1968 was passed?
* Did crime disappear after the AWB of 1994 was passed? Did it reappear after it expired?
* How many accidental deaths result from firearms misuse every year? How about from gravity?

Ahhh, but if you read "public safety" as " the safety of public servants" it actually makes sense.
Ask the Jews of Nazi Germany how safe they were.
Ask the students at columbine,VT and the other schools how safe restrictions made them. Ask Suzanna Gratia-Hupp how safe firearms restrictions made her and her parents at Luby's cafeteria.
Restrictions on firearms make the public less safe because it creates an imbalance of power that favors the madman, criminal and tyrant. The founding fathers knew this that is why they said shall not be infringed.
