This Day in History: May 30

That they are perfectly united in opinion and determined to pursue the most effectual measures, and to use the whole force of the Kingdom, if it be found necessary, to reduce the rebellious and refractory provinces and colonies.

And we know how their inflexible arrogance worked out. Isn't it revealing how the willingness of tyrants to desist and negotiate increases based on the amount of force a rival is capable of fielding?

That's why, when the Second Amendment is working properly, the incentive for abusers to behave themselves likewise increases, with the seemingly paradoxical (but only on the surface)result of a more peaceable society. The deterrent effect reduces the likelihood of physical conflict just as surely as it gives an individual predator pause to reconsider.

Those working to weaken such protections should also give pause, and consider the results they get may not be the ones they set out to achieve.

David,

The second amendment does not work. It is men's resolve that works. President Bush was correct when he said that the constitution is just a piece of paper. Yes, that piece of paper is suppose to mean something...but does it?

How many laws violate the constitution? At least 20,000 gun laws. Then, there is McCain/Feingold. Then, the Patriot act 1 & 2. There are many abuses.

The piece of paper is not working!

The ATF has proven that they can do anything they want, and get away with it. They make the law. They are the law. The piece of paper is not stopping them.

What will? Another election? The "perfect case"?

What will put an end to the abuses? What will put this country back on the right track?

You have told the schoolyard bully he can't bully people. His response is the age-old one. "Oh yeah, what are you going to do about it?"

Funny thing about earthquakes. The pressure for the Big One just builds and builds, and it just gets hotter by the minute way down deep, and then, when this immense pressure can be borne no longer, Wham! A whole lotta shakin'goin' on.

Thomas Jefferson was referring to slavery when he said "I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just."
ANY slavery. Any tyranny over the mind of Man.
If Second Amendment: The Document is no longer preventing government abuses, it's because the People, the unorganized militia at large, have been mis-educated and intimidated away from their part in making the Constitution work.
Friend of mine was gassing up his car one night. Policeman came up to him after seeing his holster peeking from his jacket bottom, wanted to see his concealed handgun permit. This was before shall-issue, and he had none, but he wasn't carrying concealed. His gun was on the seat of his car in plain sight. It IS possible to tuck a jacket behind a holstered gun to keep it visible so as not to break the nonsensical law. The cop said "You better watch yourself." He had done NOTHING.
Yes SIR.
A militia leader in the Midwest was interviewed by the FBI. They asked if he would travel to the next Ruby Ridge or Waco to intervene.
"Why? There's plenty of you federal sons-a-bitches right here."
There you go.
It'll be hard to set up a perimeter when any citizen -- with no visible weapon, no camouflage, nothing -- might be ready to end what tyranny he can, when he can.
There will be no siege, no defined battlefield, just Unintended Consequences.
It is said that the government has a list of people likely to cause problems in the event of a crackdown, who will be visited, interrogated, even detained.
They will find us honest, intelligent, hospitable, passionate about freedom. They may personally even find us likeable and admirable.
But since we have little way of knowing their intentions when they show up at the door, they should come with the understanding that they MAY not be going home. It all depends on them. If they don't have time for such scrutiny of the persistent and infamous criminal gangs that rule the streets, how the HELL can they have the manpower to harass patriots who just want their country healthy and sane again? It'll be a clear sign of who's considered a REAL threat.

Why? They're BANKING on a lazy population that's willing to do what FEELS good. They've been teaching that for decades now. They've been nibbling away at sanity and what worked. For the large part they're people who want to do what's right and what will make things better, but they're deluded into thinking that black is white and wrong is right. 2+2 can equal 5 if you WANT it bad enough they're told.

Well the people telling them that are the ones who want to get rid of that paper in favor of something much, much worse. The kings of old, the mighty men of renown.

Look at the Heller briefs and you'll see that nut-jobs existed "back in the day" and how to deal with them. Appeasement and removing guns from the hands of the good guys in those days would have given us many more examples of mass murders, but for some reason, sanity perhaps, it wasn't done.
