Having made Inquiry, I find the rule with regard to the Indulgence in Question, is, that Prisoners do not wear their Swords. I therefore cannot approve of it, more especially as it gives such general Dissatisfaction to the good People of the country.

Am I reading this correctly--that we've gone from serious discussion about whether or not prisoners (of war, I assume) can wear swords, to the necessity of proving that one is not on a "prohibited persons" list before purchasing a firearm?
How far we have fallen.
Today is also the date in 1983 when the Island of Grenada was liberated from the Communist Bernard Cord, and the New Jewell Movement.
Longbow
Yes--there was a back-and-forth with Major French demanding certain formalities respecting his status as a British officer, and Washington had correspondence not only with him, but with Brit generals concerning treatment of prisoners and civilians. I've done posts on Maj. French before, he was kind of a martinet and pita--but I continue to include links to these "this day in history" posts-the reason I do them in the first place--to give WoG readers the opportunity to get a feel and understanding for the resistance and founding period...you know, kind of a Santayana learn from the past thing...
Unfortunately, you have to deal with dunderheads like me, who had to look up who Santayana was.
Makes your educational efforts kinda slow-going.
Much appreciated, though.
