The Great Waubonsie Valley BB Terror of '08

Two Waubonsie Valley High School students were charged with disorderly conduct after they were spotted handling a BB gun in the school, prompting the campus to be locked down for about five hours.
I particularly love the photo of the "We R OK" sign.

No you weren't, kids.

If it had been a real active shooter situation, you'd have been lambs in a slaughterhouse.

But you listened to a teacher who was utterly powerless to defend you and stayed penned in, didn't you?

Not a one of you thought independently and put a desk through that window so you could get out if you needed to, did you?

I wonder--had a monster thirsting for blood breached your classroom door, who would have screamed louder in helpless terror? You or the adult?

"Parents waited anxiously until the school was re-opened at 12:30 p.m. Parents were allowed to pick up their students, although school officials encouraged them to remain in school."

Probably just because I am a waco home school father, but I can't imagine anyone "allowing" me to pick up my children. Really what I can't imagine is anyone stopping me from doing so.

There were no "adults" in the school. Maybe some really old babies, but no adults.

"Parents were allowed to pick up their students..."???

"Students" "Children" Whose students?

Once your child becomes a student in a state school he/she is no longer your child. He/she is the state's "student" and, so that you will not realize your parental right are being infringed, you will be "allowed" to occasionally exercise limited parental controls as long as they do not conflict with the school's agenda.

I am a student in my senior year at WVHS and I can't entirely agree with you.

The media, obviously, did give you all the info. A lot of classrooms, such as the one I was in, "armed" themselves with textbooks, fire extinguishers, and the like in case some trigger-happy fruitcake really did burst in the door.

I personally believe the police did a good job of searching the school. Wabonsie is a BIG school with a few thousand students and 3 floors. Those kids with the "We R Ok" sign were on the 2nd floor, and windows are a luxury at my school. There are only about a dozen or so that acually have them out of a couple hundred. You would have probably been in a room were the only way out was a door into a hallway were said fruitcake could be. The way the building is set up, evacuating the buliding would mean putting ourselves in harms way.

And Kent, as for our teachers being "big babies", I acually take offense to that. The only "baby" about the whole thing was our principal. It's her first year here, and she does not accuratly represent the rest of the staff.

Adults are not afraid of guns, and especially not BB guns.

If that's your definition of an adult, then there are very few of them around here.

You do realize that guns/bullets of the right caliber CAN kill?

Adults can recognize a real threat. The criminal would be the thing to fear; not the gun. If I see a gun in a person's hand, but the person is obviously not a threat, why would I be afraid?

Guns of ANY caliber can kill. But so can knives, fists, chairs, bats.....etc. Seeing a gun is no reason to lose your mind and cower in fear.
