Now we see why retroactive amnesty for criminal telecoms was so important. They are too "vital" to be subjected to the rule of law (or the market). Their help will be needed in the fight against enemies of the state.

The "unavoidable" part actually has another aspect, as well: at this rate, before long, nobody will be able to do anything without transgressing some sort of law, and that may well be the point. To fuel the illusion of its own legitimacy, government must have "problems" to "solve", and if there really isn't a problem, one can be neatly created with new mala prohibita. The War on (some) Drugs has proven to be a beacon lesson among tyrants in how to create, foster, and (appear to) fight a criminal underclass that simply didn't exist before the witch hunt started.

Re: Straightarrow: I regret to say this but in the near future will come a time when any person who protests against the administration will be labeled a lawbreaker and subject to arrest. To quote a famous European diplomat on the eve of the Great War in 1914:
"I can see the lamps going out all over the land"
Whether we see them lit again in our lifetimes or stay permanently cold and darkened will depend on the courage of our fellow citizens.
