The man is right on the mark.

I do not want to meet that man in a dark alley unless he's on my side!

I am absolutely an adherent of violence. When it is justified. Never in history has the common man improved his lot without the judicious use of violence or the realistic threat of its use, societally speaking.

Violence in protection of the innocent person is the most effective and in the end, most humane use of man's abilities to stop marauders and stop injudicious use of violence agaisnt innocents.

When people tell me they don't believe in violence, I know I am talking to a coward. Because every time I have heard that, those very same people were more than willing to accept the benefits of violence done on their behalf to ensure them the peaceful enjoyment of their lives and personal pursuits. What they are really saying is "I would rather hire it done." They wish not to risk anything for even the continuation of their own lives or liberty. They have no problems "hiring it done".

The rest of us though do end up with a problem. Because, eventually, those "hirers" realize that they can also hire enforcers to take for them what they have not the courage to attempt on their own. When the become too arrogant and believe themselves to be insulated from consequence is when societal upheaval occurs, usually fatally so for a great many.

The author is absolutely correct. If one has not reconciled himself to fight with everything at his disposal in pursuit of his own survival, he sure as Hell cannot be expected to do so for principles like liberty.
