I wouldn't say "pointless," because that presupposes the NZ police establishment doesn't understand full well its actions are tyrannical. [More]

I hold a NZ firearms license. Not for MSSA, but the standard license. The Kiwis are not going to go down easy on this one. They have a lot of respect and admiration for their police - mostly because they act like decent people and treat their fellow citizens with respect.
Another incident happened several months ago. An undercover cop (no undercover armour) was shot an killed with an air rifle. Freak instance - but just as dead. Shortly afterwards, a woman held up a dairy (convenience store) and took a hostage. She was armed with an air rifle. The AOS (armed offender squad) shot her dead. Had the previous incident not occured, the police probably would have been lambasted (by the Maori community, at least) for excessive force. As it was, they were thanked for a job well done.
They are a pretty well balanced community and will handle this ok.
DO NOT equate NZ police with the thugs in America.
