Why did ATF issue—and then rescind—a ruling declaring air guns ‘firearms’?

The fact remains—ATF has the testing conclusions to execute this aborted ruling if and when they wish to—in fact, if their analysis about what  constitutes a United States Code-defined “firearm” is "correct"—and if they don’t know, who does?—this could be a Sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of airgun dealers and owners that could be dropped at any time. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column looks at an agency with the power to destroy your life that evidently makes things up as it goes along.

I'd love to say "unbelievable," except I can't.

A school board employee here MEANT to send out an all-hands email about snow-day policy, but instead attached the wrong file and sent the names, addresses, Social Security numbers and other personal data of hundreds of school employees.
Oops.
I think this Airsoft revelation was something like that. It wasn't time. Yet. Probably intended for after Christmas when many more thousands of people will have their bead-blasting toys.
I wonder what other surprises the Bureau of Alibis, Terrorism and Fascism has waiting on the hard drive. I'm not surprised by anything they say or do.

David,

Outstanding investigative journalism!

Basically you and Mike V. single handedly exposed a massive abuse and overreach of federal power and an attempted cover up of said same.

In my view this ruling if implemented would far exceed the scope of something like watergate as it would create felons out of tens of thousands of individuals with the stroke of a pen. It relates to one of the highest officials in what is commonly held to be a rouge agency rife with prior abuses. And perhaps most disturbingly shows how the BATFE tried clumsily flush the whole thing down the memory hole.

As I've said often before thanks for all you do.

If there was any justice this is the kind of investigative journalism that deserves a Pulitzer prize.

Well done!

Thank you. Unfortunately, you probably won't hear much of this outside of me 'n Mike's place.
