Apparently there are some who believe that a phone call reporting the killing of a bear that had posed a threat to one's children is more horrifying than this phone call.

Actually, whether it is defense against an animal or murder of a mother, there's no difference. The real difference, as you pointed out in your article, is whether it is one of us peons or an exalted "Only One" doing it.
