The opening paragraph tells you all you need to know about the dishonest bias of this premise:
Guns are in the news every day in our society. They're the weapon of choice in countless "routine" homicides and mass murders. Motorcycle gang shootouts. Armed robberies. School shootings. Domestic violence rampages. Guns are a staple of our entertainment culture, a critical part of the story line in a seemingly endless number of TV shows, Hollywood films and video games. They're also the subject of ongoing and often acrimonious political debate. Guns -- and the violence they either inflict or seek to prevent --- are a major presence in our individual and collective psyches.I guess citing even one potential instance where guns might be beneficial doesn't fit what they're trying to do here.
And what are they trying to do here?
Aside from the usual regressive subversion we've come to expect from anti-gun males, it would appear a good bit of posturing to mask the truth about themselves...

Lets see if I have my numbers correct and please correct me, anyone if I'm off the correct count.
Guns, in the hands of governments during the 20th century. Were guns used by many governments to murder their own citizens to a tune of 185,000,000 (one hundred and eighty five million men, woman and children).
What I find interesting is the sheep (aka today's citizens in the USA) are acting spot on the very same way as the murdered sheep of the 20th century.

I understand and appreciate the fact that not all members of the male gender are remotely interested in guns and the heavenly aroma of Hoppe’s # 9. But, at the same time those people really need to understand that I do not give a damn about their fascination with nylon panties and Victoria’s Secret’s latest bras.
Not one single right to keep-and-bear-arms advocate whom I’ve ever known or even heard of has ever promoted the idea that folks who do not like nor want to own and/or shoot a firearm be forced to do so and I would be the last person to presume to be so intolerant to insist otherwise.
Now, on the other hand, any idiot who presumes to attempt to force me into giving up my arms and wearing panties and a bra will soon discover that he will definitely need a firearm and had damn well better be faster and more accurate than I.
Violence is not necessarily a bad thing.

It is interesting when someone confuses violence with a tool that can be used to act out violence - a gun. Without access to guns, gangs have used knives, chains and several variants of heavy blunt objects used as clubs such as tire irons, long wrenches, 2x4's and sports equipment. Baseball bats and golf clubs are frequently used. One of the most notorious usages was by Mark Wahlberg, who was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon for using a golf club to blind a Vietnamese man, receiving a two year sentence.

The book author includes a picture of his father pushing a lawn mower. Before mowers, hand tools such as sickles and scythes were used to cut lawns. Both were also used for defense or assault by otherwise disarmed peasant populations. Likewise, axes used to process timber are also useful.
Eastern martial arts were developed by monks who did not have "weapons" such as swords, bow & arrow, or spears. Instead, they used hiking staves (bo) and grain separation flails (nunchukau) to great effect in a successful defense.
