We're the Only Ones Who Are Gun Collectors and Avid Hunters Ourselves

But guess what we are first and foremost...[Read]

Via Kevin R, who writes:
Following the recent shooting of two children outside their school on the outskirts of Edinburg, TX, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino is pushing for a new state law to make it illegal to discharge a firearm within 3 miles of a school.

Original story here:

Nevermind that this school only opened *5 months ago* and the surrounding land was well know to be used for hunting/shooting grounds.
Nevermind that the surrounding property is private property.
Nevermind that the people in question were apparently acting irresponsibly.
Nevermind that the investigation is still ongoing.

What does this mean for gunowners in Hidalgo County and the rest of Texas? How many locations can you drive to that are NOT within 3 miles of a school?

Perhaps the question that should be asked is: Why are schools being built adjacent to *known* hunting/shooting grounds? This is not a singular instance in Hidalgo County.

Here is the Google Maps link to the property. Note all the undeveloped land around it.

Luckily the Texas legislature won't be back until '13. In the meantime we'll keep an eye on things the interim committees are playing with to make sure this jerk doesn't get anywhere with this.

Another example of a knee jerk legislation proposal. It'll be interesting to see just how he wants his pet law worded. Expect zero tolerance for everyone except for "only ones"?

Welcome to the land of urban sprawl. A child was shot while on a playground on school grounds. You have to understand that politicians and law enforcement will have to do something and not just stand around twiddling their thumbs. Can you imagine how the parents must feel in all this? Their child is paralyzed for the rest of his life because he was at school.

The second article you linked was interesting. An illegal immigrant who is not even allowed to own a gun was found to be illegally poaching near by. You can be sure the family of the paralyzed child won't be suing him anytime soon. They will go after the school district and whoever else had money.
