I have a hard time getting worked up about this article for a few reasons. First, the author is asking people to behave a certain way, not imploring the use of government force to make them behave that way. Second, there is some sound advice there: Kidproof your guns and gunproof your kids. There are plenty of ways to lock a defensive ready gun to keep small fingers out without adding too much time to access it.
Had they made your distinctions, I would not have featured this. They're giving advice to an audience that does not necessarily have your knowledge and insights, and that makes it potentially dangerous and irresponsible, whether they're stumping for new laws or not.
Although they do advocate for training youth in gun safety etc , they then do the one thing that would negate the training . They say to hide guns and ammo from the view of children .
Funny how my generation grew up with rifles/shotguns at the ready in different corners of the house . Yet you practically never heard of an accidental shoot. I'm guessing it was the training as a youth and the fact that guns were looked at as tools with rules .
