As they approached, one of the sentinels did detect them and fired upon them. They rushed towards the Loyalists, screaming like Indians, and firing their muskets. The Loyalists must have thought they were outnumbered and fled into the night. By the time the small group of Patriots reached the fire there was not a Loyalist to be found, but they could be heard running through the woods. [More]
