When I worked for the California Highway Patrol, we had some TOs (Traffic Officers) out on disability who were caught and forced to a) return to work and b) repay the income they received fraudulently. I've known a few NY cops (Nassau and Suffolk Counties - I grew up back there and returned several times over the years) who were able to scam disabilities and get away with it even in the face of evidence they really weren't disabled.
Unfortunately, this is endemic in the VA. I can't tell you how many cases I've seen of 100% disability income (it was around $2400 a month the last time I worked at the VA) for guys who not only weren't disabled (physically or mentally), but were assisted in getting rated that way by doctors who hated the military and enjoyed "screwing the system". PLUS, when they received their 100% rating, they would get back pay to the time they first applied for a disability rating. Quite a few of them ended up getting checks for $30K, $40K, and I even once heard of one for $80,000 (although I believe that guy deserved what he got - the VA had been screwing with him since he was injured in Vietnam).

This is why those of us that are truly disabled can't get our benefits. The Hierarchy at the VA has decided that every veteran applying for benefits is trying to game the system. I was medically discharged from the Marines and have been fighting the VA for the last 12 years. The system is well and truly fucked.
Damn! That "spate" made tea come out my nose!
